Brief Background about University of South Africa

Unisa is Africa’s largest open distance learning institution and the world’s oldest specialized distance education university. We enroll approximately a third of all students in South Africa.

In 1946, the University of the Cape of Good Hope, which was founded in 1873 as the University of the Cape of Good Hope, became the first public university in the world to educate completely by distance education. Unisa was perhaps the only university in South Africa that guaranteed equal access to education to all individuals, regardless of race, color, or creed over the years.

Our rich history reflects this active past, particularly our huge and outstanding database of graduates, some of whom can be found in the highest levels of society around the world.

Because of our deep roots in South Africa and the African continent, Unisa can now legitimately claim to be the African university serving mankind.

Financial aid is a sort of assistance based on approved study expenses. Each year, the Department of Higher Education and Training’s National Bursary Rules and Guidelines determine the maximum amount of money that can be spent on education.

NSFAS will distribute funding to qualified students based on their permitted cost of attendance; this does not include club and society coverage or fines.

To see if their application has been authorized, applicants must go to the MyNSFAS portal. NSFAS will notify universities regarding new and returning students’ funding eligibility.

Qualified students’ registration (cost of study) fees will be refunded to NSFAS after registration. After receiving and processing registration cost data, NSFAS will certify the actual funding amount.

It’s important to remember that NSFAS has no idea what program of study an applicant has chosen until registration data is received. Even if a student qualifies for financial aid, he or she chooses to enroll in an unfunded course. NSFAS will not process or award any funding in this case. As a result, it is the task of the applicant to get familiar with the list of NSFAS-funded initiatives (available on their website)
