University of Fort Hare NSFAS Application
About University of Fort Hare
The Institution of Fort Hare is a public university in Alice, Eastern Cape, South Africa. It was a significant African higher education school from 1916 to 1959, giving a Western-style academic education to students from all throughout Sub-Saharan Africa and culminating in the establishment of an African elite.
Alumni from Fort Hare were involved in several later liberation movements and governments of newly independent African countries.
Although the university was absorbed under apartheid in 1959, it is currently part of South Africa’s post-apartheid public higher education system. Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Robert Sobukwe, Oliver Tambo, and others were among those honored.
Others were students at the university.
