  • The Texas Board of Nursing (BON or Board) is in charge of licensing, regulating, and monitoring the status of over 260,000 licensed registered nurses and 98,000 licensed vocational nurses in the state. The BON has approved 114 registered nurse education programs and 98 licensed vocational nurse education programs.
  • With the passage of the first Nursing Practice Act in 1909, the state of Texas formally recognized professional nursing (NPA).

Texas Bon Brief History

  • With the adoption of House Bill 47 enabling the issue of licenses to licensed vocational nurses in 1951, the state of Texas formally recognized licensed vocational nursing. V.T.C.A., Occupations Code, Chapters 301, 303, and 304, establish the Texas Board of Nursing.
  • This year commemorates the 104th year that the Board has served the people of Texas. Innovation and the Board’s ability to foresee the change in the health-care and regulatory spheres are two critical factors to the Board’s continued success. Throughout the 100 years since the NPA’s passage, the Legislature has revised the Act to reflect developments in health care and nursing practice.
  • The State’s definition of nursing now reflects current practice, the Board’s disciplinary authority is expanding as the practice grows more complex, and the Board’s accountability to approve nursing education programs is acceptable, thanks to timely modifications. The key themes in statutory modifications have been public safety and access to skilled practitioners.

The mission of Texas Bon

  • The Texas Board of Nursing’s (BON) objective is to safeguard and promote the welfare of the people of Texas by ensuring that every nurse who has a license in the state is qualified to practice safely. The Board’s objective is accomplished through regulating the practice of nursing and approving nursing education programs.
  • The Nursing Practice Act’s goal takes precedence over the interests of any individual, the nursing profession, or any special interest organization.
