About SAICE Patrons Engineering Bursary Scheme

  • The South African Institute of Civil Engineering Technicians and Technologists established the SPEBS bursary scheme in 1992. (SAICET). “SAICET Patrons’ Engineering Bursary Scheme” is the abbreviation. It was agreed that SPEBS would be kept when SAICET joined with the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE). SPEBS is now an essential component of SAICE’s outreach programs.
  • SPEBS provides financial assistance to financially disadvantaged and academically deserving students pursuing a National Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering at any of South Africa’s postsecondary institutions. National Diploma students receive bursaries after passing their first level (S1) exams, while degree students receive bursaries after passing their first-year tests.
  • Bursaries are awarded on a semester-by-semester basis and are contingent on the student’s exam performance. These funds will be used to help with registration, tuition, and books. To discover qualified students, we collaborate with a number of tertiary institutions. Successful candidates must produce documentation of registration for the anticipated semester of study at the university before funds are disbursed. Bursary checks are then made out to the tertiary institution where the student would be studying.
  • SPEBS is a non-profit organization that runs solely on donations. Since 1992, contributions have come in the form of either gift to the bursary pool or bursaries to be distributed in the patron company’s name. Every year, the scheme is audited.

Required documents when applying for the bursary
