About SAAFoST Bursaries

  • The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation is a non-profit organization that brings together professionals in food science, technology, and related fields to serve South Africa’s food and allied industries. SAAFoST strives to expand the knowledge base of food science and technology by promoting scientific research, publishing a membership magazine, hosting workshops, seminars, exhibitions, and meetings, as well as supporting in educational initiatives. With roughly 2000 members across Southern Africa, the company is non-profit and mostly administered by volunteers.
  • The SAAFoST Foundation has been founded to oversee the administration of SAAFoST academic bursaries, honors, and prizes.
  • Bursaries are awarded based on 3 major factors – academic merit demonstrated potential and employment equity.
  • The bursary award will cover tuition fees up to an amount of R35 000 per year.

Required documents

Matric students:

  • ID document OR passport (certified copy)
  • Passport-sized photo (head & shoulders)
  • Grade 11 final results (certified copy)
  • Matric latest results (certified copy of)
  • Personal Statement (outlining the following: how your education and training within the food science and technology sector will make a positive impact in the scientific community and in your own life: max 1 A4 page)
  • Reference Letter (written by someone who has known you in a learning capacity for a minimum of 3 years)
  • National Benchmarking Test or Potential Test results from your selected tertiary institute

Undergraduate students:

  • ID document OR passport (certified copy)
  • Passport-sized photo (head & shoulders)
  • Latest tertiary academic results (details on the application form)
  • Personal Statement (outlining the following: how your education and training within the food science and technology sector will make a positive impact in the scientific community and in your own life: max 1 A4 page)
  • Reference Letter (written by someone who has known you in a learning capacity for a minimum of 3 years)
  • Proof of registration for 2020 at your tertiary institute

Eligibility requirements

Matric Students

  • Citizen of South Africa
  • Before applying, you must have lived in South Africa for at least three years.
  • OR the equivalent of a completed Further Education & Training Certificate (FETC) (General) qualification
  • Achieved a minimum of level 5 in Physical Science and Mathematics (60-69 percent) (as well as Life Science, but not mandatory)
  • Enrolled full-time at a recognized post-secondary institution in South Africa to pursue a first undergraduate degree or diploma in the discipline of food science and technology
  • *Preference will be given to Matric students with outstanding academic performance (i.e., Undergraduate Degree up to B.Sc (Hons) = a maximum of 4 years, Diploma = a maximum of 4 years, B. Tech Degree = a maximum of 5 years).

Undergraduate Students

  • Whether you are a South African citizen or a permanent resident of South Africa,
    Before applying, you must have lived in South Africa for at least three years.
  • Before applying, you must have been a member of SAAFoST for at least 12 months.
  • Enrolled to pursue a first undergraduate degree or diploma in the subject of food science and technology full-time.
  • In South Africa, enrolled in a recognized tertiary institution
  • Be able to complete your qualification in the period allotted (i.e., an undergraduate degree up to B.Sc (Hons) takes three years, a diploma takes three years, and a B. Tech degree takes four years).
  • *Students with strong academic results or potential will be given priority.
