PCCN® is a specialty certification for nurses who give direct care to severely unwell adult patients in any setting. Nurses who pursue this qualification could work in areas including intermediate care, direct observation, stepdown, telemetry, transitional care, or emergency rooms.

Fees & Initial Eligibility Requirements

  • A valid, unencumbered RN or APRN license in the United States is essential.
    An unencumbered license has no terms or conditions that limit the nurse’s practice and is not currently being submitted to formal punishment by the board of nursing in the state(s) in which the nurse is practicing.
  • Direct supervision of practice, drug administration constraints, and/or practice area exclusions are examples of provisions or requirements.

Candidates must complete one of the following alternatives for clinical practice hours:

Option for two years

Over the previous two years, work as an RN or APRN in direct care of acutely sick adult patients for 1,750 hours, with 875 of those hours accrued in the most recent year preceding your application.


Option for five years

Practice as an RN or APRN for at least five years, with a minimum of 2,000 hours in the direct care of acutely sick adult patients, with at least 144 of those hours accrued in the year before application.

Eligible Clinical Practice Hours:

  • Must be done at a facility located in the United States or Canada, or in an institution that meets the U.S. standard of progressive care nursing practice.
  • If working as a manager, educator, preceptor, or APRN, those spent actively giving direct care to severely sick adult patients or supervising nurses or nursing students at the bedside of acutely ill adult patients.
  • Are your clinical supervisor or a professional colleague able to verify them? (RN or physician).
  • If you are chosen for an audit, you must give contact information so that your eligibility for clinical hours can be verified.
