About NSFAS Application for Universities

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) was established in accordance with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. NSFAS is a bursary scheme that offers poor and working-class South African students with completely funded free higher education and training.

The National Student Financial Aid System (NSFAS) Act (Act 56 of 1999) established a government institution under the Department of Higher Education and Training to provide financial support to impoverished students who wish to continue their education at public universities or TVET institutes.

Documents required for your NSFAS grant application to be verified

Take note of the following key documents that must be submitted in order to complete the application:

  •  All applicants must provide a copy of ID. A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted
  • Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse
  • Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided
  • Proof of income: applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide latest payslip not older 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse)
  • Person with disabilities: to complete Disability Annexure A form.

NSFAS will pay for your expenses listed below if your funding application is approved.

  • Accommodation
  • Transport
  • Living allowance
  • Book allowances
  • Incidental/personal care allowance

How to get funding from NSFAS

  • You should first register for myNSFAS account and submit your application online. Kindly CLICK HERE to go the myNSFAS portal to create an account.
  • Follow these simple steps to submit your application once your myNSFAS account is set up and functional:

Step 1: Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and complete the sections on the screen by providing the required information

Step 2: Upload required supporting documents where applicable

Step 3: Click on Submit’
