National nurses week

  • Nursing is a caring profession. Nurses assist patients when they are most in need, alleviating their pain and assisting in their recovery. The value of nurses to individuals, communities, and society was proved on a daily basis during the COVID-19 pandemic, as these frontline professionals placed their own health at risk to treat patients in the most difficult of situations.
  • Nurses are deserving of more praise than we can give them for everything they do. National Nurses Week, which takes place in the second week of May, allows communities, employers, and people to recognize nurses and the nursing profession for all that they do.
  • Every year, from May 6 to May 12, National Nurses Week is observed to commemorate nurses and the critical role they play in safeguarding our health and prosperity. The many varied ways that nursing organizations, the health care sector, and communities around the United States honor National Nurses Week are highlighted in this brief history of the nursing profession and the said Week.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has announced the new theme for International Nurses Day (IND) 2022: Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Invest in nursing and respect rights to secure global health, focusing on the need to protect, support, and invest in the nursing profession to strengthen health systems around the world.

National Nurses Week has a long history.

  • Nurses’ achievements are now recognized in countries all over the world, although it took a long time for the nursing profession to get official recognition. In the first decades of the twentieth century, the American Nurses Association (ANA) was created in 1896 and flourished fast. In 1934, the American Nurses Association pushed for the introduction of an eight-hour workday for nurses, among other causes in support of the nursing profession and public health.
  • The International Council of Nurses (ICN) declared May 12 to be International Nurse Day for the first time in January 1974. Because it is the anniversary of Nightingale’s birth in 1820, the day was chosen.
  • Since 1896, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has supported and promoted the nursing profession. The nursing profession is promoted at the state and regional levels by each of the ANA’s state and territorial nurse associations. On these dates, each organization holds a celebration to honor the contributions that nurses and nursing contribute to the community.
