About Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA)

  • The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) is a legislative authority established under the Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996 and a registered Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) for the mining and minerals industry under the Skills Development Act No. 97 of 1998 as amended.
  • The MQA must complement the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) objectives for the National Skills Development Plan (NSDP) 2020-2030, as well as the Mining Charter’s objectives under the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act No. 29 of 1996.
  • The Quality Assurance Unit is mandated by law to ensure quality assurance and alignment of learning programs in the mining and minerals industry.
  • The MQA is in charge of overseeing a number of skill development programs. Skills training and leadership aspire to create a skilled and educated workforce whose abilities are recognized and appreciated by the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). This is to ensuring that the mining and minerals industry has enough qualified workers to promote health and safety, create employment equity, and boost production. The MQA Board set the following six strategic priorities to boost skill development in the sector:
  • Promote efficient and effective governance and administration.
  • Improve skills development planning and decision-making through research.
  • Promote work-based skills development to support transformation in the mining and minerals sector.
  • Facilitate access to occupationally directed learning programs for the unemployed.
  • Support mine community training initiatives to access economic opportunities.
  • Ensure the delivery of quality learning programs in the mining and minerals sector.

MQA is awarding bursaries to qualified students to study in one of the following fields

For University and university of technology

  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Jewellery Design Manufacturing
  • Electro-Mechanical Engineering
  • Geology
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Occupational Hygiene
  • Mine Surveying
  • Occupational Medicine
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Environment Health and Management

For TVET colleges:

  • Boilermaker
  • Fitting (including Machinery)
  • Motor Mechanic (Diesel)
  • Instrumental Mechanic
  • Electrician
  • Millwright
  • Fitter and Turner
  • Rigger Ropes man

The bursary covers the following expenses:

  • Tuition
  • Accomodation
  • Books
  • Meals


The following factors will be prioritized in the selection of candidates:

  • Applicants to HDI
  • Applicants who are financially disadvantaged – with a combined annual income of less than R600 000
  • Female candidates
  • Applicants who live in remote areas
  • Applicants who have applied to study at a tertiary institution in their community
  • A good academic record.
