med surg certification – MSNCB
- Members of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) demanded a specialty certification produced by med-surg nurses for med-surg nurses, so the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCBTM) was formed.
- The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) is a professional nursing specialty organization committed to the practice of medical-surgical nursing. As the AMSN Board of Directors and members worked to promote medical-surgical nursing as a specialty, they saw a need for an optional exam that would certify medical-surgical nurses in their field.
- AMSN convened a task force of medical-surgical nurses in early 2002 to study the need, create a pattern, and create the Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN®) exam.
- The pilot exam was held to collect data in October 2002, and the first official test was given in May 2003, with 272 candidates taking part.
- MSNCB and the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN) began working together in 2014 to create a new credential for RNs who work in care coordination and transition management roles. Nurses from ambulatory and acute care settings represented this critical role in health care across the board.
