About Mangosuthu University of Technology

At a meeting with the Chairperson of Anglo American and De Beers Consolidated Mines in 1974, KwaZulu Chief Minister Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi proposed the concept of establishing a tertiary educational school concentrating on technical courses. The University of Cape Town’s South Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) was commissioned to do research into the possibility for more technicians to be trained and employed in South Africa.

The Anglo American and De Beers Groups Chairperson’s Fund decided to provide R5 million to build the necessary facilities after the study revealed that there was an immediate need and demand for more technicians, and later companies such as Mobil Oil, AECI, the S.A. Sugar Millers’ Association, the Rembrandt and Distillers Corporation, LTA Limited, Sasol, and other sponsors provided additional funds to establish the Schools for Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.

The project was given the green light in mid-1977, and the KwaZulu Cabinet opted to build the Technikon on the Umlazi site, which is part of KwaZulu but also part of the Durban Metropolitan region. It was chosen to open its doors as soon as possible due to the urgent need for technicians and the requirement to build up the institution in a systematic manner. As a result, temporary but permanent structures were developed and constructed, and classes commenced in 1979. The Technikon moved into its main buildings in September 1981, once they were completed.

Mangosuthu Technikon was renamed Mangosuthu University of Technology in November 2007.

NSFAS Application by Mangosuthu University of Technology

Financial aid is a sort of assistance based on approved study expenses. Each year, the Department of Higher Education and Training’s National Bursary Rules and Guidelines define the maximum amount of money that can be spent on education.

NSFAS will distribute funding to qualified students based on their permitted cost of attendance; this does not include club and society coverage or fines.

To see if their application has been granted, applicants must go to the MyNSFAS webpage. NSFAS will notify universities about new and returning students’ funding eligibility.

Qualified students’ registration (cost of study) fees will be reimbursed to NSFAS after registration. After receiving and processing registration cost data, NSFAS will certify the actual funding amount.

It’s important to remember that NSFAS has no idea what program of study an applicant has chosen until registration data is received. Even if a student qualifies for financial aid, he or she chooses to enroll in an unfunded course. NSFAS will not process or issue any funding in this case. As a result, it is the obligation of the applicant to get familiar with the list of NSFAS-funded initiatives (available on their website).

Requirements for Eligibility

NSFAS will submit UCT the necessary application information for grant eligibility verification.

It’s worth noting that all NSFAS applications are thoroughly checked for the following eligibility requirements:

Should be a South African citizen or permanent resident with a bachelor’s degree at a minimum.
monetary eligibility
If the student has previously been registered at a tertiary institution, and the number of years of registration, the N+1 rule should be applied
