  • The goal of the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN® exam) is to assess whether it is safe for you to start working as an entry-level nurse. It differs greatly from any test you may have taken in nursing school. While nursing school exams are information-based, the NCLEX-RN® assesses your ability to apply and analyze your nursing knowledge. You’ll be judged on your ability to make nursing decisions using critical thinking skills.
  • The “Meeting Client Needs” concept is used to structure the NCLEX-RN® exam. There are eight subcategories and four major categories. Many nursing programs follow the medical model, with students taking distinct classes in medicine, surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry, and obstetrics. The NCLEX-RN® exam, on the other hand, integrates all of the curricula.

Kaplan nclex – TYPES OF QUESTIONS

Questions are mostly multiple-choice, with four answer options; however, there are some other forms of questions. Multiple-response, fill-in-the-blank, hot spots, chart/exhibit, and drag-and-drop are examples of alternative question styles. All of the questions include the nursing topics.

Consider the following scenario:

A 23-year-old woman with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is returned to the recovery room one hour after an uneventful delivery of a 9 lb., 8 oz., baby boy. The nurse would expect the woman’s blood sugar to

  1. rise
  2. fall
  3. remain stationary
  4. fluctuate

Is this an obstetrical question or a medical/surgical question? In order to select the correct answer, (2), you must consider the pathophysiology of diabetes along with the principles of labor and delivery.

TAKE THE NCLEX-RN EXAM CAT

  • The term “computer adaptive test” refers to a type of testing that is interactive and depending on your responses to questions. The CAT ensures that the questions are not “too hard” or “too easy” for your skill level.
  • Your first question will be simple—below the required level of knowledge. If you get it right, the machine will ask you a slightly harder question. If you respond wrong, the machine will choose a question that is significantly easier.
  • The computer can determine your degree of proficiency by continuing to do so throughout the test.
