Joyce Travelbee’s Biography and Career

  • Joyce Travelbee, a nursing theorist, was born in 1926 and is well-known for her work. Travelbee graduated from Louisiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1956. Yale University awarded her a Master of Science in Nursing degree in 1959.
  • Her professional background was primarily in mental nursing and education. She served as a psychiatric nursing lecturer at the DePaul Hospital Affiliate School in New Orleans, Louisiana, and later at Louisiana State University, New York University, and the University of Mississippi’s Charity Hospital School of Nursing.

The Human-to-Human Relationship Model is Joyce Travelbee’s contribution to nursing theory.

  • The Human-to-Human Relationship Model of Nursing was created by Travelbee. In 1961, she released her book, Interpersonal Aspects of Nursing, in which she articulated her theory.
  • The model’s assumptions are based on Soren Kierkegaard’s existentialism philosophy and Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy. Existentialism holds humans responsible for the decisions they make in life. Logotherapy is a type of psychotherapy based on the concept that completion is the best safeguard against emotional instability, as stated by Viktor Frankl in Man’s Search for Meaning (1963).
  • Suffering, meaning, nursing, hope, communications, self-therapy, and a targeted intellectual approach are the basic elements of nursing theory. Travelbee defines each of these concepts to help nurses comprehend the model.
  • Suffering varies in severity, duration, and depth, ranging from a feeling of unease to intense anguish. According to Travelbee’s perspective, nursing’s responsibility is to assist patients in finding meaning in their suffering and in maintaining hope.
  • Hope is described as a belief that change may and will occur, bringing with it something better. It has the following six characteristics:
  1. It is strongly associated with dependence on other people.
  2. It is oriented toward the future.
  3. It is linked to elections from several alternatives or escape routes out of its situation.
  4. The desire to possess any object or condition, to complete a task or have an experience.
  5. Confidence that others will be there for you when you need them.
  6. The hoping person is in possession of courage to be able to acknowledge their shortcomings and fears and go forward toward their goal.
  • Nursing, according to Travelbee, should be done through human interactions that begin with the first meeting, move through the stages of forming identities, and culminate in the development of empathy and sympathy. The nurse-patient connection is critical to effective patient care, and it is formed through an interaction process.
  • The initial meeting, the visibility of personal or emerging identities, empathy, sympathy, and the creation of mutual understanding and rapport are the five phases that make up the patient-nurse interaction.
