About JB Marks Education Trust Fund Bursary

Individuals who do not have the financial resources to fund their studies are eligible for the bursary. Its primary goal is to provide funds to people who want to work in mining and related industries. The bursary is primarily intended to benefit South African nationals, although it also assists people from other parts of the country.

The Board of Trustees selects and funds programs that it deems appropriate.

Typically, 200 undergraduate students and 50 postgraduate students are supported by the bursary program.

Required documents when applying to JB Marks Education Trust Fund Bursary

  • Paystub for union members (for verification purposes).
  • A certified copy of the applicant’s most recent school grades.
  • Copies of both the applicant’s and the union member’s certified identification.
  • Acceptance letter from the tertiary institution or a letter from the institution confirming your application.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ELIGIBILITY
Before applying, applicants must meet the following minimum entry criteria (please note that if you do not meet all of the requirements, your application will be rejected):

  • NUM member or official in good standing OR a former member or official (now retired, disabled, or retrenched)
  • Dependent of a current or former NUM member (children and spouses only)
  • Studying for a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree (full-time, part-time or correspondence)
  • Attending a reputable tertiary institution (University or FET College)

NB: NO OTHER FUNDING IS AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME

  • Postgraduate candidates – you must be a current JB Marks bursary holder who is continuing your postgraduate studies within one year of finishing your undergraduate degree.

The bursary covers the following areas;

  • registration
  • tuition
  • exams
  • textbooks
  • extra lessons by tutors
  • meals
  • accommodation
  • capacity-building programs

Closing date for applications

Acceptance of fresh applications will end on 1 July. Applications submitted after this date will not be accepted or attended to.

  • Alternatively, you can also pick up a hard copy of the application form at your local NUM regional office.
  • Along with your online application, submit clear copies of the mentioned supporting papers (submission of these documents is required; if any elements are missing, your application will be ignored).
