Historically, women have made up the majority of nurses in both the profession and the academic discipline. Women’s nursing responsibilities involve both patient care and keeping the wards and equipment clean. Women make up the majority of the nursing workforce in the United States, accounting for 86 percent of Registered Nurses (RNs) in 2021; globally, women account for 89 percent of the nursing employment.

Madeleine Leininger

  • Madeleine Leininger (July 13, 1925 – August 10, 2012) was an internationally recognized educator, author, theorist, administrator, researcher, consultant, public speaker, and the creator of the concept of transcultural nursing, which has had a significant impact on how to care for patients from various cultures and backgrounds.
  • She is a Certified Transcultural Nurse, an Australian Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, and an American Academy of Nursing Fellow. Her notion has evolved into a nursing science that is now an important aspect of how nurses practice in today’s healthcare environment.

Dorothea Orem

  • Dorothea Orem was a nurse who chose to enter the profession in order to help others improve their lives (1914-2007). Orem established herself as a key theorist of nursing practice and education with her Self-care Theory of Nursing.
  • Orem went to the Providence Hospital of Nursing in Washington, D.C., after graduating from Seton High School in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1931. Two of her relatives worked there. She went on to become an adult medical-surgical and pediatric staff nurse, as well as an emergency room evening supervisor, after graduating and gaining clinical experience in the operating room.
  • Orem received his bachelor’s degree in nursing from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1939, and began teaching nursing and biological sciences at the Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit, Michigan. In 1945, she graduated from The Catholic University with a master’s degree in nursing education.
