Dorothea Orem

  • Dorothea Orem was a nurse who chose to enter the profession in order to help others improve their lives (1914-2007). Orem established herself as a key theorist of nursing practice and education with her Self-care Theory of Nursing.
  • Orem went to the Providence Hospital of Nursing in Washington, D.C., after graduating from Seton High School in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1931. Two of her relatives worked there. She went on to become an adult medical-surgical and pediatric staff nurse, as well as an emergency room evening supervisor, after graduating and gaining clinical experience in the operating room.
  • Orem received his bachelor’s degree in nursing from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1939, and began teaching nursing and biological sciences at the Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit, Michigan. In 1945, she graduated from The Catholic University with a master’s degree in nursing education.

Dorothea Orem – Research and teaching

  • Orem became the director of Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit after getting his MSN. She went on to work in the Division of Hospital and Institutional Services for the Indiana State Board of Health. She worked to raise the standard of nursing care in hospitals across the state.
  • Orem began building her nursing theory around this time. In 1959, she returned to her undergraduate college, The Catholic University, where she taught for nearly a decade and served as dean for a year. Orem also worked with the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare as a consultant on improving practical nursing education.
  • She worked as a consultant for a number of schools and institutions to assist them to build their curricula, and she also wrote a book on the subject.

Orem’s Theory of Nursing
There are three parts to Orem’s general theory of nursing:

  • Self-care is a notion that focuses on the performance or practice of tasks that people do on their own behalf. Those actions could include things like maintaining one’s existence and functioning, growing oneself, or correcting a health defect or condition.
  • The notion of self-care deficit, which states that nursing is required when a person’s ability to care for themselves is restricted or non-existent, and they require assistance.
  • The nursing system theory focuses on the relationship between a nurse and a client, as well as the fully or partially compensating nursing system and supportive-educative system that occurs between the nurse and the individual.
