  • Because there is no higher level of education available for practice-based training in nursing, the Doctor of Nursing Practice, or DNP, is referred to as a terminal degree in nursing. Nurses with a DNP are in high demand for leadership roles in nursing that focus on clinical applications, and they are seen as vital players in the future of healthcare in the United States.
  • The Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a program that aims to develop nursing leaders. These nurses have the highest level of nursing skill and, after earning the necessary certifications, work in a clinical setting or as a leader. They have a strong understanding of how to influence healthcare outcomes through organizational leadership, policy execution, and direct patient care.

Note;

  • NPs with DNPs are not the same as physicians or other medical doctors, despite the fact that they have a doctoral degree (MDs). A DNP, on the other hand, denotes that a nurse has finished the highest level of nursing education. Some DNP-educated NPs advance to positions of leadership in the healthcare profession. Others stay in the field and use their credentials to work as nurse practitioners in positions such as those indicated above.
  • While NPs with MSN degrees can also pursue these nursing specializations, nurses with a DNP degree may have an advantage when applying for these roles and negotiating their working conditions. A DNP is and will likely remain a viable option for nurses seeking to progress to the next level.

Before pursuing a doctorate in nursing practice, there are a few things you should know (DNP)

The DNP is a qualification, not a job title.

  • Other nursing degrees include the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (Ph.D.), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) (BSN).
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) and Registered Nurses are two examples of roles (RN). To complete the requirements of these roles and to sit for each of the required certification exams, you must have a certain degree.

Obtaining a DNP does not imply that you are a physician.

  • A doctorally educated Nurse Practitioner’s training differs significantly from that of a physician. Both are necessary and beneficial to patient care, but they are not the same thing.

Not all DNP programs are created equal

  • Do extensive research on your program to make sure you will meet the educational demands of the APRN Consensus Model if you plan to practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) upon graduation.

You can have a DNP and not practice as an APRN

  • APRNs include Nurse practitioners, Nurse Midwives, Nurse Anesthetists, and Clinical Nurse Specialists). However, many nurses with DNPs do practice as APRNs, hence it is a practicing doctorate.
