The University of Technology on the Cape Peninsula has a long and illustrious history.
The Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon combined on January 1, 2005, to form the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. This merger was part of a larger national shift that changed the face of higher education in South Africa.
Today, it is the sole university of technology in the Western Cape and the region’s largest university, with over 30 000 students, many campuses and service points, and more than 70 programs.
The Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon, which date back to the early 1900s, were the institution’s humble origins.
Kader Asmal, the Minister of Education, announced the National Plan for Higher Education in March 2001. Various higher education institutions around South Africa were merged under this concept, resulting in the development of Universities of Technology.
The Minister approved the name, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, in 2003 after a lengthy procedure that included the formation of merger task teams and a rebranding process.
Cape Peninsula University of Technology was established in 2005, and Prof Lineo Vuyisa Mazwi-Tanga was named as the institution’s first Vice-Chancellor on February 1, 2006.
Dr. Trevor Manuel was elected as the university’s first chancellor in May 2008.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government-run organization that reports to the Ministry of Higher Education and Training. NSFAS offers financial aid in the form of a study bursary to qualified students who want to or are currently enrolled in TVET colleges or public universities.
Who is eligible for a bursary?
If you are a South African citizen planning to study in 2021 or currently studying at a public university or TVET college and match the following criteria, you are eligible for an NSFAS bursary:
SASSA grant beneficiaries, or if your combined household income is less than R350 000 per year, or if you are a person with a disability with a combined household income of less than R600 000 per year, or if you started university before 2018 and your family income is less than R122 000 per year.
What is covered by the NSFAS bursary?
The following expenses are reimbursed for applicants who receive NSFAS funding:
Food, lodging, or transportation
Personal care and learning materials
- You should have your own phone number and email address.
- A copy of your ID or a copy of your birth certificate, as well as copies of your parents’, guardians’, or spouse’s IDs 1 year’s IRP5 or proof of income (if applicable)
- Proof of income from your parents, guardians, or spouse.
- If you are a SASSA grant recipient, you will not be needed to show proof of income.
- Applicants with disabilities must complete and sign the Disability Annexure A Form, which can be downloaded here.
- A Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form, which can be downloaded here, must be completed and signed by an applicant who has been identified as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development.
You can apply using a smartphone, tablet, or computer to fill out an online application. To apply, simply follow these simple steps:
- Step 1: Go to www.nsfas.org.za and select’myNSFAS’ from the drop-down menu.
- Step 2: Sign up for a myNSFAS account.
- Step 3: Select the ‘APPLY’ tab and respond to the questions that appear on the screen.
- Step 4: After uploading the necessary supporting documents, click ‘submit.’
- Your application reference number will show on the screen after you click ‘submit.’ The reference number will be emailed to your cellphone number and email address as well.
