The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the leading organization representing the 4 million registered nurses in the United States. The ANA is at the forefront of efforts to improve the quality of health care for all people. ANA, which was founded in 1896 and has members in all 50 states and territories of the United States, is the profession’s most powerful advocate.

The purpose of the ANA is to advance the nursing profession by:

  • Fostering high standards of nursing practice;
  • promoting a safe and ethical work environment;
  • supporting nurses’ health and well-being
  • advocating on healthcare issues that affect nurses and the general public.

American nurses association Mission

  • Because the ANA represents all registered nurses, we are here to help you attain your full potential. We’re here for you every step of the way, from professional development resources to lobbying Congress on issues that affect nurses.
  • When individual nurses achieve their full potential and unite with others, ANA can accomplish its mission: “Lead the profession to shape the future of nursing and health care “

Empowering nurses to be change agents

  • The ANA recognizes that recognizing the importance of nurses is only the beginning. Nurses work in all health care settings and have a unique perspective given that they serve in so many diverse roles and specialties. As a result, nurses can provide valuable insight and suggestions on how to improve health care in the United States.
  • To accomplish this, nurse wellbeing is paramount. While nursing dedication often means that self-care comes low down on the list of priorities, it is vital to put this back on the agenda. With healthier nurses come improved patient outcomes, greater staff retention for organizations, and most importantly: nurses who are treated with the respect that their commitment deserves.
