  • According to the International Council of Nurses, advanced nursing practice is “a field of nursing that extends and expands the boundaries of nursing’s scope of practice, contributes to nursing knowledge, and promotes the advancement of the profession.”
  • Advanced practice nurses (APNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) have earned a master’s or doctoral degree, allowing them to work at a higher level in their field. Nurses with advanced nursing practice designations can become more self-sufficient and diverse in their profession and patient care.

What are the responsibilities of Advanced Practice Nurses?
Nurses who have completed an advanced nursing practice education are prepared to handle a wide range of activities in patient care and the greater healthcare system. APRNs are responsible for a variety of tasks, including:

  • Assess patient symptoms and medical histories
  • Develop diagnoses
  • Order tests
  • Prescribe medication
  • Develop and modify treatment plans
  • Provide referrals for future care

Intensive training Nurses have similar responsibilities as RNs, but they have more autonomy and can lead other nurses on the team. They can also work in their work to improve overall patient care and treatment programs.

How to Become a Nurse Practitioner in Advanced Practice

  • To become a registered and specialized advanced practice nurse, you must go through a series of processes. The first stage is to obtain a license as a registered nurse.
  • After that, you’ll need to enroll in a master’s degree program and take classes in your chosen field. After you’ve graduated, you’ll need to take a test to complete your certification. These will differ based on the advanced nursing practice field you wish to pursue.
  • You will be formally registered and able to practice as an APRN once you have completed the exam. Advanced practice providers are in high demand.
